Universal Commands - Down

The "Down" command. Use at a distance or close by to stop the dog instantly, whatever it is doing.

An important command which will help control a dog in a situation where it may be endangered or get out of control if left to it's own devices.

In Border Collie Rescue all verbal commands used are accompanied by hand signals which serve to emphasise and compliment the instruction.
This is of great benefit when training deaf dogs, dogs with learning difficulties and dogs with short attentions spans.

Lower your hand, arm extended and palm down, from a horizontal position towards the ground.

This command is an exaggerated gesture and can be made increasingly flambouyant to be seen, understood and effective over a distance.

A down command is very useful. One of the key commands you should train your dog to understand and obey.
Once installed in the dogs vocabulary and effectively trained to be reacted to immediately, the command can be used in a number of situations where there is the possibility that the dog may move into hazard or be distracted.

Some dogs with poor recall can be put in a down position and held there until the handler gets close enough for recall to work.
