Border Collie Rescue - Keeping an "Eye" on the breed

Border Collie Rescue is a breed rescue charity, incorporated as a non profit distributing Charitable Company, limited by guarantee, and run and staffed entirely by volunteers.

Border Collie Rescue is set up to work for a better future for Border Collies and Working Sheepdogs and is involved in the Rescue, Health care, Re-habilitation, Re-homing and Sanctuary of unwanted members of the breed.

The society also works to raise awareness about the needs and requirements of the breed and is active in supporting & promoting legislation for the benefit & welfare of these dogs.

As a formal organisation we are a structured voluntary group with rules and a registered governing document prohibiting members and trustees from benefiting from work done for the charity.

We have over 300 members in the UK, each sharing a part of the workload according to available time and abilities.

Through a survey of UK Rescue centres that we conducted at the end of 1996 we have shown that there are in excess of 10,000 unwanted Border Collies and WSD's in need of re-homing annually. This is a huge number of dogs. Many are destroyed because there are insufficient homes available for the number of dogs currently being bred.

Also, as many rescue dogs have behavioural problems that need to be addressed before a dog is re-homed, a great deal of time, skill and resources are needed to properly assess and rehabilitate each individual dog.

Border Collie Rescue is working to tackle the roots of these problems and is set up to be more than a dog re-homing charity.

In 1995 we ceased to accommodate our dogs in kennels after research that concluded that kennelling was counter productive to the care & rehabilitation of this breed of dog.

We now only use a foster home system where the dogs can get one to one attention.

while in our care, all dogs are assessed and we seek home that are compatible with the dog's needs and abilities.

We are here to seek justice for these dogs.
