Lost - Ben Nevis - Tuesday 24th March approx' 10 am.
Help is urgently needed to locate a Border Collie lost on Ben Nevis.
Romany is an 11 yr old, tri coloured Border Collie bitch. She is hard of hearing and suffers from epilepsy, requiring a daily dose of Epiphen (30mg) which has kept her fits at bay for 3 years.
We had agreed to take Romany, and her sister Niji (Rainbow), in because their lady owner had died and her husband was unable to keep them due to work commitments.
Prior to coming to us, the husband wished to scatter his wife's ashes on Ben Nevis, a spot frequented and loved by the couple and dogs, while she was alive. He parked at the visitors centre and took the dogs, off lead, up the tourist path, past Achintree (farm).
Romany disappeared into the mists close to a point where the public footpath from Nevis River joins the tourist path up the mountain, below Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe.
She was last seen heading uphill towards the rocks below the Loch, possibly having scented a deer.. The weather was pretty bad, with mist and snow and in spite of immediate searches in adverse conditions, she has not yet been found.
If anyone lives in or is visiting the area, please look out for Romany and contact us if she is sighted.
Romany is wearing a red fabric collar with a disc with her owners details on.

Above - Romany - crop from family picture. This is the dog we are looking for. Bear in mind she is now older
Niji has quite big feet, by the look of the above photo's so does Romany.
Romany is Black, White and Brown, a tricolour. Romany has a shorter coat than Niji, but their facial appearance is similar.
|
|
THIS IS NIJI, Sister to ROMANY. Niji is seriously missing her 'mum' and is now also seriously missing her sister. We are sure she would appreciate the efforts of anyone who cared enough to spread the word and help find her sister.

We found out about this situation at around 10 am on Thursday 26th March when we received a phone call to say only one dog was coming into our care, instead of the two we had agreed to take in.
The Ben Nevis visitors centre, local mountain rescue, local Police, local radio, local authority and hundreds of others have been informed. There is an active email campaign alerting people in areas where there has been a reported sighting. Posters are being put up.
Latest Update
Following the possible sighting of Romany just south of Oban over the Easter weekend, we have made several changes to this page and added some extra pages to the section. There is now an extra poster that can be displayed anywhere in the UK and is only available from the new 'How to help' page. Updates are now being archived as this page was getting too long. Only the current (latest) update will be displayed on this page - as it is replaced by a fresh update, it will be moved to Archives.

Update - 10am - 14th
April It is now exactly three weeks since Romany went missing. The latest sighting was on the A816 road in the suburbs of Oban, where a dog matching her description was seen heading south towards Lochgilphead over the weekend. This fits with the update from the weekend before where a dog matching her description was seen near Appin on the A82, heading south towards Oban. If these sightings are Romany, she is on the move and heading south into a different area. Gillie has been sending emails alerting people in the Oban area. She has been in touch with many, including Oban Taxi's who are sympathetic and very helpful and are spreading the word and putting out posters. Dawna (SSPCA) is notifying her counterpart that covers the Oban and Argyll and Bute area. We have been in touch with Louise Casey at the local stray pound at Achnabreac Kennels, where they also rescue dogs and she has been very helpful. The Argyll and Bute dog warden service has also been notified and Steve Woods, the dog warden is passing on word and keeping eyes open. Posters and links have been sent by email. We are keeping in daily contact with the Aberdeen stray pound in case Romany is found and handed in there. In Fort William itself, and around the Ben, the search has continued over the weekend, headed by Moira and Dave Mee. It has been a very busy weekend on Ben Nevis with thousands of visitors, many who have seen posters and are aware of the search. It is almost impossible to conceive of how a dog could avoid being seen by someone, if she is still loose on the mountain or foothills around Fort William. We have been told a Mountain Rescue team, complete with dogs, has been holding training exercises on the Ben over the weekend. They are aware. We always have to consider the possibility that Romany has come to grief. It is more likely that a dog will find a body or lair, off the beaten track than a casual walker. A sharp eye has been kept for signs of scavengers, crows, etc - gathering on the Ben, but nothing untoward has been noted, which is re-assuring. The local paper has still not printed an article, however they have promised locals they will run something in the next issue, out Thursday. Finally - Niji. Her new owner phoned in a few minutes ago and has reported that Niji is behaving like she has lived there all her life. She is obedient and well mannered and has had no trouble adapting to the new routines and area. She has been out in the car, is eager to jump in and travel. prefers to wade through streams rather than jump over them and is a joy to be around. Somehow we don't think she will be coming back to us. |
