If you have a behavioural problem with your pet Border Collie or Collie Crossbreed, we may be able to help you with a one to one assessment at our centre. A sheepdog assessment may or may not form part of this service. If you require a sheepdog assessment you will need to specify this - see the next section below. |
This service is not intended to be a complete behavioural analysis or modification program. |
The assessment is intended to see if the root of your dogs problems can be identified, to advise you on any simple corrective measures and assess your ability to implement them and to offer a prognosis for the future of your dogs relationship with you, taking into consideration your current circumstances and environment. |
The idea of this assessment is to help you decide if it would be worthwhile proceeding with a behavioural modification program or if it may be better to re-home your dog. It will also help you decide if you should go to the expense of employing a professional behaviourist to take on your case and supervise a suitable behavioural modification program for you and your dog. |
Under some circumstances it can be unproductive to implement behavioural modification and this is an inexpensive means of getting the information you need to help you make that decision. |
A fee will normally be charged for this service which will support the running costs of the centre. £15 will be charged for an hours assessment and you will be required to be present with your dog. |
This is done by appointment only and a deposit of £5 will be required to confirm your booking. You will need to phone us to request an appointment. During this call you will get some free advice and we will assess as to whether it would be worth your while to attend the centre. Your appointment will be confirmed after we receive your deposit. If you cancel or fail to attend you will loose your deposit. |
The balance of the fee is payable at the end of the assessment. Please bear in mind that of you are late it will reduce the amount of time we will have available to spend with you and your dog in your allocated hour. If it is possible, and with mutual consent, we may be able to extend the period to give extra time, but this would incur an extra charge at the proportionate rate of £15 per hour, chargeable in 30 minute sections. |
The fee will be waived for other charities or for individuals with proof of means tested benefit. We would still ask for a deposit to secure the booking but this would be refunded on attendance. |
If you would like to make an appointment for an assessment, please contact us on 0845 6044941 2pm to 5 pm weekdays. |

If you have a dog that Works Sheep (or a pet Border Collie that is showing herding behaviour) we can offer assessments around livestock to be able to quantify the dogs ability to work sheep and the extent of its drive and eye. |
This service is not intended to be a training session to break in or de-sheep a dog. The assessment is intended to see if the dog has natural instinctive reactions to sheep and how controllable these reactions are. |
If you have a working sheepdog that is not responding to training this assessment may be of assistance to you in making your decision as to whether you should keep the dog and persevere or if the dog needs to be re-homed. It may also help you decide if the dog should be re-homed as a potential worker or as a non worker. Experience has shown us that many declared non workers passed onto us are simply not responding to the training methods of the particular handler and by changing these training methods the dog works well. |
If your dog is being kept as a pet, this assessment will help you decide if the dogs instincts are so strong that it would be detrimental to both you and the dog to persevere in trying to keep the dog in a pet home where it would be unhappy. It will also help you understand if the dog is a liability or an asset around sheep and we will be able to offer advice as to if and how you may resolve the problems exposed. |

Disobedient dog? Selective hearing? Easily distracted? Good close by but out of reach will simply ignore you? |
Common problems with the Border Collie and many other breeds of dog, these are not behavioural problems, simply problems with training. |
Dogs respond differently to training and require different approaches and training methods - in spite of what you may be told by those with something to sell - there is no universal approach that will successfully train every dog. |
The purpose of one of these session is to assess you and your dog and your method of training and to advise you on how you may make better progress with a different approach. You will be shown many tips and offered guidance on what seems best for you both. From here you can decide if you need professional training help and what sort of professional trainer would best suit you and your dog. |

The new centre will provide facilities to offer Seminars, Demonstrations, Training days and Working Forums for groups of up to 20 people accommodated indoors in our classroom. Occasionally larger gatherings can be accommodated outside for practical sessions or under cover of our fold yard. |
A variety of subjects will be covered, all relevant to the Border Collie as a pet or as a working dog. Most will be one day events but there are plans for 2 day events over some weekends. |
There will be limited opportunities for overnight accommodation at the centre. |
When we have finished setting up the facilities to enable these events, the program will be available through a link below this section to a dedicated page. If there is no link, please come back in the future and check again and keep your eye on other pages of our website. |

We are happy to be able to offer limited B&B accommodation for people and dogs at our rural facility near York |
Dogs stay free, but humans pay to stay in one of our double guest rooms in the listed farmhouse at our centre. |
This service is offered in order to assist us in funding the centre - all profits go to the running of the facility. |
For people interested in a break or holiday where the cost can be offset by working a few hours a day on site, we offer working stays. |
A 2 day weekend break and a 7 day full week holiday break are the norm, but we can be flexible with arrangments. |
These breaks are designed to give the participant some experience of working in a rescue centre and some insight into the Border Collie and Working Sheepdog. |
Work Experience Placements (block residential or part time) for students on Animal Care or other appropriate courses - and other interested people. |
We are able to offer some work experience placements at our centre. The centre is not a boarding establishment or re-homing unit. It's purpose is to offer facilities for the accommodation, care, assessment and re-habilitation of rescued Border Collies & Sheepdogs. |
The resident dogs at the centre are referred here for sanctuary, recovery, working assessment, behavioural analysis and modification. |
Work experience placements are normally offered as block residential courses or as regular day release or half day attendances. The period/duration of each placement can be adjusted to fit into most curriculum requirements. |
We can also sometimes fit students in for more casual attendances, either short term residential or accumulative occasional day release over the year. Please contact us to discuss your requirements. |
These placements are intended to be of assistance to students on College courses or University Degree courses where work experience is a required part of the curriculum, however we can extend this opportunity to post graduates or trainees who are in employment and who's employers feel that a work placement of this nature would be useful in broadening their experience. |
We will also consider applications from students on accredited distant learning courses, providing we regard the course as relevant to the sort of experience that can be gained by the placement and the course tutor concurs. |
Acceptance on these placements is additionally subject to view of CV, formal interview at our centre and the approval of the learning establishment the student is attending if this is appropriate. Availability is all year round but spaces are limited. |
Members of the public who are not in the above categories may wish to join us as volunteers and help out on a similar basis at the centre in order to gain experience of the sort of work involved and broaden their knowledge of dog handling, care, welfare & the Border Collie breed. |
If so, please call us on 0845 6044941 - 2 pm to 5 pm weekdays. |

We have a breed reference library in a room at our new centre, with a collection of books on the Border Collie and its many disciplines and canines in general. Some of these books are biographical accounts of people who have spent a lifetime with the breed, others are text books. All are sources of information and a few are rare or limited editions you may find difficult to get hold of. There is also a collection of magazines offering access to articles and accounts of the breed and other canine subjects. |
We are also collecting Videos and DVD's on various aspects of canine care, training and the Border Collie. |
The library is a resource we wish to make available to the public or to people with an academic or practical interest in the breed and a need to research. Anyone supporting us by working with us in a voluntary capacity or staying with us on one of our varied accommodation programs will have access to this resource. |
Non residents wishing to use this resource may do so by prior appointment. |
The Library is available to non resident visitors daily from 10am to 4pm. Residents have access at any time during their stay unless the library has been booked for exclusive access. Books must remain in the library and must not be removed under any circumstances. Videos and DVD's may be viewed in the adjoining room. |
If you wish to take advantage of this resource, please call us during normal office hours to make an appointment. |
We are seeking donations of Books, Magazines, DVD's, Videos and other material of interest to our library. Many authors have donated books and Iris Coombe has donated over 40 books from her personal library. Individuals have donated unwanted books and other material. |
