A day in the Life - A short Video about work at the BCR centre

Work Experience Placements (block residential or part time) for students on Animal Care or other appropriate courses

We are able to offer some work experience placements at our centre. The centre is not a boarding establishment or re-homing unit. It's purpose is to offer facilities for the assessment and re-habilitation of Border Collies and Working Sheepdogs.

The resident dogs at the centre are here for Sheepdog assessment and behavioural analysis and modification and some training.

Work experience placements are normally offered as block residential courses or as regular day release or half day attendances. The period/duration of each placement can be adjusted to fit into most curriculum requirements.
Residential
Block Residential - a period of time where the entire work placement requirement is fulfilled as a continuous block.
Casual Residential - where the entire work placement requirement is fulfilled by the accumulation of shorter periods.

Residential accommodation is offered in a shared bunk room (sleeps 2) and basic meals will be provide by Border Collie Rescue on the days a student is staying over and working. As residential work placements are normally taken on one at a time it is unlikely that there will be a need to share, however there may be overlaps so if you wish to attend you should be prepared to share. We would not expect a student to share with a member of the opposite sex.
Students on placements will have use of other staff facilities at the centre and additional access to guests facilities such as the small reference library and guest recreational room if not otherwise in use. A TV and Stereo system is provided in the bedroom.
In exchange we would expect a student to put in a 40 hour week based on 8 hours a day, Mondays to Fridays - mainly on a split shift system but hours would vary according to the type of work they were involved in. A typical split shift could be 8 am to 1 pm and then 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm. A typical straight shift would be 8 am to 5 pm. Breakfast would normally be 7.30 to 8 am. Lunch 1 pm to 2 pm. Evening meal 7.30 pm onwards.
Weekends would not normally be included in the placement and students may wish to return home at weekends, however their bunk and room would still be available if they wished to stay over weekends but Border Collie Rescue would expect them to contribute towards any meals they participated in on days they were not working.
Duties would mainly involve working with the dogs and this would include basic kennel duties; handling and exercising dogs; grooming; supervised training; supervised assessments, including sheepdog assessments; supervised behavioural assessments and supervised participation in rehabilitation programs.
Students would also be expected to participate in the re-homing side of our work and this should include attending home checks, delivery of dogs to new homes, follow up visits and administrative procedures.
Some general office and administrative duties would be involved in the placement, including answering calls from the public and listening in to advice line enquiries.
We could vary programs slightly to suit curriculum but all students would be expected to take part in all the forms of work involved in running the centre and caring for the dogs.
In addition to the hours spent working, a student would be expected to contribute a proportionate time and effort to the domestic running of the household, including preparation of shared meals.
Over the time a student spends with us, we would expect them to have gained some experience of all aspects of running a specialist assessment, re-habilitation, rescue and re-homing centre and a broad understanding of the Border Collie as a breed, with particular reference to the behavioural problems so common in the breed as a pet.
Unlike some providers, Border Collie Rescue does not charge residential fees for students on work placement programs - we do expect you to work your hours to the best of your ability during your placement and follow the directions of your supervisors and managers.
For each full day you work we will also provide breakfast, lunch and evening meal and you are at liberty to supplement this diet at your own expense in any way you wish. Tea and coffee Etc would also be available 24/7. Hangovers will not be taken into account.
If, as would be normal, a student works and stays Monday to Friday, going home Friday evening for a weekend off, we would have the student work a straight shift on Friday to finish at 5pm and no evening meal would be provided. They would be expected to be back by 8 am Monday morning - earlier if they want breakfast.
If a student stays over the weekend they may work split shift on Friday, but either way they could take their evening meal in the normal way. We would expect them to contribute financially for meals they took over the weekend or on any days they were not working.
Non residential
We can offer regular weekly half day or full day placements to make up the requirements of a particular course or curriculum.
In these instances we would provide lunch for those on full day placements but students on half day placements would be expected to take meals off premises.
Duties would be similar to those on residential placements and half day placements would normally be in the mornings.
Access and use of other staff facilities at the centre and additional access to guests facilities such as the small reference library and guest recreational room - if not otherwise in use would be available to all students outside their working hours.
Tea and coffee, etc. would be available.
In all cases Students would get refreshment breaks in compliance with normal employment practices.
We can also sometimes fit students in for more casual attendances, either short term residential or accumulative occasional day release over the year. Please contact us to discuss your requirements if they are unusual.
These placements are intended to be of assistance to students on College courses or University Degree courses where work experience is a required part of the curriculum, however we can extend this opportunity to post graduates or trainees who are in employment and who's employers feel that a work placement of this nature would be useful in broadening their experience.
We will also consider applications from students on accredited distant learning courses, providing we regard the course as relevant to the sort of experience that can be gained by the placement.
Acceptance on these placements is additionally subject to view of CV, formal interview at our centre and the approval of the learning establishment the student is attending if this is appropriate. Availability is all year round but spaces are limited.
At the end of each placement, participating students will be given a completion certificate outlining the work experience they have gained.

To enquire about the possibility of attending our centre on a work placement, please phone us during normal office hours - 2pm to 5 pm Weekdays - to discuss this or if you have specific queries or questions you wish to ask.
